It all starts at the base layer. With walls that are oftentimes white, egg shell, or gray, modern styled rooms may come off first as sterile or even medical. However, color isn't off limits, just not the standard when it comes to painting the walls.

Warm wood tones, muted yellows, and navy are some of the more iconic additions to the modern room, and often make their appearance with furniture. However, for those looking for an ultra-modern aesthetic without any Scandinavian influence, white and grays are often preferred still with the bursts of color saved for art pieces and smaller accessory items.

What makes a modern room feel modern? Some say it's clean lines. While it may start there, another intrinsic element is the statement piece. Even a room with a period sofa can feel modern when matched with a ultra-modern armchair, stool, or coffee table.

Modern furniture has its icons and selecting from a few of these styles can turn the room towards modern. What we are talking about goes beyond the egg chair®. This is the realm of the creative, but for those that need inspiration, choosing a sleek or futuristic seat or a glossy table top can start to bring your modern room to life.

After the seating and table tops are out of the way, comes the most fun, but arguably tedious task of finalizing your modern project: selecting accessories. There are three primary ways to approach this hunt, and that is based on the type of modern room you are designing.

The first involves glam, pop, and the wow factor. These rooms don't shy away from accessories, and use them to add flashes of color around the room. With this focus, more is more. Things like chandeliers, large art pieces, and colorful table top sculptures all fit nicely.

On the other hand, minimalist modern design is the polar opposite of glam. Usually accessories are saved for one or two beloved pieces. These can say something about the room's purpose, those who live in it, or both, but generally accessories serve as symbolic items that evoke some feeling or connect us to the place.

While we focused on the two extremes of glam and minimalism as food for thought, something closer to the middle of these two is still at home in modern design. The home's environment also plays a large role as well. Sometimes accessories are the external world. A large window with a view of nature can serve as art and the right plant, succulent, or cactus can provide a burst of color.
