Mattresses are one of the most difficult products to find eco-friendly versions of. One of the many reasons for this is that they are bulky, are a pain to recycle, and take a lot of materials to make. That said, with the trend of the environmentally conscious consumer, there are more brands now that are devoted to using renewable resources for their bedding, while still being enviably comfortable.
However, not all mattresses parading as environmentally friendly are so. Here are some of the materials to look for: organic materials, latex, wool, and untreated cotton. That's because most of the environmentally problematic processes that go into making materials for mattresses happen when foams are made (most memory foam is synthetic and uses petroleum) and softening fabrics (most fabrics are treated with caustic chemicals to make them softer and this is not good for the environment).
Look for the certifications. The mattresses that hold themselves to the highest standards for allergens also oftentimes use organic and conscious materials. Greenguard is one of the most scrupulous certifications available for low toxicity bedding -- so check to see if your bed ditched the chemicals with this great cert. Also, read up on the materials. Not all latex is organic or high quality so make sure that you are supporting farmers that are doing things right.
Awara is a strong latex hybrid contender that has taken its craftsmanship seriously and donates mattress procedes to offset carbon costs. Zenhaven has taken their quality seriously and with a latex mattress with organic wool and cotton with a certificate from the Sustainable Furnishings Council you can know that this decision protects against negative impacts. Avocado also has a Greenguard certification and uses organic materials, and even boasts a Vegan mattress offering. Take a look at the list below for more...
