Sleeping in the Cold ↓ Scroll to Top 10
For those that live in a cold environment or are constantly cold, a sleeping surface that is constantly cooling you is the last thing you want. For those sleepers, the best thing is a mattress that retains as much heat as possible. However, since the mainstream often has the opposite problem (sleeping too hot), it can be difficult to find the right materials to provide a toasty sleep.
So what kind of materials retain the most heat? The answer is commonly foams such as memory foam. Because of the contouring action of memory foam, there is more surface area that contacts the body, getting warmer faster. Additionally, synthetic foams are naturally an insulator, retaining heat rather than diffusing it away from the body.
What Kinds of Foams Retain Heat?
Because of different additives, not all foams retain heat. Steer away from foam with gel, copper, graphite, or other additive that claim to be 'cooling'. However, not all warming foams are good for you. Some foams emit toxins, so make sure that you look for certified CertiPUR-US foams, which are low-emission and aren't treated with additional toxins. Latex also acts as an insulator, but less so than memory foam. We've included some on this list because of its natural and healthy attributes.
Which Mattresses Are Best?
As you can imagine, most memory foam mattress brands try not to make beds that sleep warm. However, we've found that hybrid mattresses with coils and added airflow have less cooling additives near the surface in general. This will provide a warmer feel than many cooling memory foam mattresses, which is why we focus primarily on top rated hybrid mattress options here. While these options won't be too cooling, they won't be overly warming either, but they are well balanced to provide a good surface to get comfy in. Take a look at the reviews and find the one that is right for you!
Want a tech solution not listed below? The Pod cover by Eight Sleep allows you to set a sleep surface temperature and keep it all night long. It's a highly rated option, but at a higher price than those below.
