Emma is a popular mattress in a box company founded in Europe. With their North American entry into the mattress space, they're offering an all-foam design, which provides the cooling benefits of their own AIRGOCELL® foam, a cooling hybrid designed to be able to support sleepers of different sizes, and an adjustable foam mattress. Versus other competitive offerings, the Emma is somewhat more pressure relieving, making it ideal for those who prefer a soft, contouring mattress. Looking for the UK model? See our Emma UK reviews.

In the US, Emma now has three mattress offerings: their all-foam Emma Original mattress featuring their proprietary AIRGOCELL® foam layer, their all-foam Emma Shift mattress which includes an adjustable comfort layer, and their newest Emma Hybrid Comfort mattress which combines AIRGOCELL® foam and pocket springs. Most customers find these mattresses to be comfortable, with those that like it the most being side sleepers looking for a soft, pressure relieving surface.
Craftsmanship & Materials
One of the biggest differentiators of Emma's mattresses is their proprietary foams. Below, we'll dive into each mattress to see if they're right for you.
Here is what's inside the 10'' thick Emma Original Mattress:
Layer 2: Next up is a layer of Emma's point elastic AIRGOCELL® foam, which helps facilitate cooling by absorbing heat and dispersing it.
Layer 3: A layer of HALO® memory foam featuring 3 distinct ergonomic zones helps provide support for your spine and pressure relief where you need it most. This layer also helps to minimize motion transfer and partner disturbance.
Layer 4: At the bottom of the mattress is Emma's dense HRX Supreme® foam, which helps to provide strong support and stability for the layers above. This foam base helps to distribute weight evenly across the mattress while providing targeted pressure point relief.
Next, let's review their adjustable mattress, the 13'' thick Emma Shift Mattress, which was designed with to have customizable firmness:
Layer 2: The top comfort layer is graphite and titanium infused cooling foam that provides sleepers with motion isolating support while also helping to regulate temperature.
Layer 3: The next layer is what sets the Emma Shift mattress apart. The Shift Core layer is made of large pore foam with an internal pressure that responds to the sleepers body weight. Attached to this layer are Smart Valves that allow the sleeper on each side of the mattress to control the air pressure on their side, thereby allowing couples to set their own preferred firmness levels.
Layer 4: A durable base foam helps provide structure to the mattress overall while also helping to promote proper spinal alignment.
Layer 5: The perimeter is reinforced at the head and the foot of the mattress to provide added support.
Lastly, we'll take a look at their newest mattress, the 13'' thick Emma Hybrid Comfort Mattress:
Layer 2: The first comfort layer is Emma's breathable AIRGOCELL® foam. This ultra soft layer helps keeps things cool by dissipating body heat.
Layer 3: Next up is a layer of memory foam that contours to your body for cradling support while also helping to reduce motion transfer.
Layer 4: Another layer of HRX foam helps to provide additional support to the layers above.
Layer 5: The main support for the Emma Hybrid Comfort mattress comes from the 7-zoned pocket springs layer. Individually wrapped springs adapt to you body and spine to provide your body with optimum support.
Layer 6: At the base of the mattress is a stabilizing support layer which works to provide sturdy support for this mattress overall.
Firmness
Back Pain Relief
The HRX foam support in both the Emma Original and Emma Hybrid Comfort mattresses provides the necessary counter pressure and alignment for the spine, which enables both back sleepers and side sleepers to be comfortable. The supportive foam and adjustable firmness in the Emma Shift mattress should also help provide proper support for most sleepers. Still, since Emma's mattresses are overall a medium to medium firm comfort level, some larger sleepers may feel less support than desired.
Cooling
Emma's mattresses were developed with cooling in mind. With their breathable AIRGOCELL® foam as well as graphite infused foam in the Emma Shift, these mattresses do a great job removing excess heat.
Who Are Emma's Mattresses Best For?
For those that are looking for contour and pressure point relief, Emma's foam mattress is on the softer side of the medium firmness range. Plus-sized folks looking for a medium support or average sized sleepers looking for a more medium-firm feel may prefer Emma's hybrid mattress. Lastly, couples who have different body types or prefer different comfort levels might prefer the Emma Shift mattress.
