Isabella's video entry for the 2018-2019 Slumber Search Disrupt $1,000 Scholarship focused on the wasteful fashion industry and illuminated a solution in 'upcycling', which is recycling used clothing or textiles and creating a new look without the need for new materials. Isabella has already executed on her concept by creating a business where she takes in people's used clothing and creates for them new, fashionable items. We thought this was not only innovative, but also showcased her passion for this idea.
Isabella has an impressive background -- she is starting her college career at the Parsons School of Design in New York City and boasts over a 3.8 GPA. With her passion and success in design and the arts, she has a unique ability to affect positive change in the world and the fashion industry over the coming years.
In her video, Isabella did an excellent job demonstrating the current problem with fast fashion, her unique perspective on this challenge, and also what can be done about it. Also, her video dynamically weaves in her voice as a creator and entrepeneur.
In addition to excelling in school and her local business, Isabella was a finalist on Season 2 of Lifetime's "Project Runway Junior." She loves jazz and plays the tenor sax for her school's jazz and marching bands, and is a freelance photographer.
When asked about her plans at Parsons and beyond, she wrote:
By continuing my education to a specialized design institute, I will not only be refining my skills in sewing and design technique, but I will be taught new design processes, work with groundbreaking technologies, and make important connections with other designers and artists in the industry. All of these things will help benefit me, pushing me everyday to be innovative and creative with my ideas, all necessary things for me to achieve my goal of creating more environmentally friendly ways of clothing production, making the industry that I love more ethical and humane.
And what a wonderful goal that is. Congratulations, Isabella!
